For Modern, place direction keys and command roles close enough for controlled paired presses. The Modern command relationships include direction-plus-Special Move inputs and Assist combinations, so test those exact relationships rather than assuming that nearby keys will feel consistent.

For Classic, keep the six attack roles easy to identify without stretching across a crowded row. Use consistent finger assignments during drills. Hand travel is a test result, not a fixed distance that applies to every player or board.

If one key pair repeatedly causes missed or extra inputs, keep that pair out of the final layout until you retest its placement. A layout is not ready simply because every role has an assigned key.

Separate Utility Keys From the Attack Cluster

Place Drive Impact, Drive Parry, Assist, and other utility roles where a routine direction or attack press is unlikely to trigger them. Physical or visual separation can make a command easier to identify under match pressure.

Change one assignment at a time. That keeps the next drill useful: you can tell whether the new placement fixed the original error or introduced a different one. This approach also helps distinguish a reach problem from a registration problem before you shop for a new gaming keyboard.

Hardware Checks: Match the Feature to the Observed Input Problem

If one exact combination fails, repeat that same combination with the same layout and connection mode.
